“Let’s see if we can mix the gritty world of the Peaky Blinders with the love & laughter of the wedding world”
For those who perhaps have had their head down a massive hole, Peaky Blinders first aired on the BBC in 2013. It has now run for a total of four series. Presently on Netflix and confirmed to run for seven series, this BAFTA award winning drama series is truly an epic tale of gang warfare, lust and entangled relationships.
The Peaky Blinders Story
Set against the backdrop of post WW1 working class Birmingham it features the likes of Cillian Murphy, Sam Neill and Tom Hardy. It tells the story of the Shelby family and their gangster lifestyle, as they aspire to achieve and move up in the world as a result of their criminal activities. Read more about it here.
The Peaky Blinders show is named after a historic criminal Birmingham gang who famously sewed razor blades into the peaks of their flat caps. The family blinded any adversary who crossed their paths, with their homemade lethal weapons. It is fair to say the series has created somewhat of an avid fan base during its time on air. This is not only due to its amazing plotlines, but also due to the fabulous sets and 1920’s inspired costumes worn by its talented actors and actresses.
Scouting a Location:
As keen followers of the show, our team were eager to work their collective magic to see if we could convert the gritty realism of the series into the wonderful world of weddings. We needed a location that paid sufficient homage to the industrial, working class background which forms the backbone and origin of the Peaky Blinders series. With key scenes from the series filmed in Liverpool itself, we knew that our neighbouring city could potentially offer up some cracking backdrops for our planned shoot.
So, imagine our joy when we stumbled across an actual, living and breathing ‘PEAKY BLINDERS’ bar right in the heart of this fab city! True to the gritty nature of the show, The Peaky Blinders Bar in Liverpool clearly identifies with both The Garrison Pub featured in the TV series itself, and with the working class, gangland vibe that forms the backbone of the television series. Wherever you turn inside the bar you are presented with oversized wall prints of the main characters in the show. Er, hello….giant size portrait of Tom Hardy and Cillian Murphy anyone??!! Heaven on earth! This is paired with blingy chandeliers, large light up bars and statement copper brewing equipment.
Perfectly located on the Liverpool docks, the surrounding wasteland also turned out to be just the ticket for some outdoor, gritty shots, perfectly the gangland look and feel of The Peaky Blinders series. All was set to transform Peaky Blinders off the small screen and bring it smack bang into real life!
The day itself:
The day went to plan, ushered in by one of the first really bright and warm Spring days of the year. With the sun shining, we were able to capture some cracking outdoor shots to add to the images taken on location inside the bar.
The WTG team were first to rock up. With trays of flapjacks and sweet treats, we were laden down to keep the mob going through what was going to be a long day’s shoot. We seriously had enough sugar induced sweet treats to feed 5 armies, never mind one! We were quickly followed by the others and set to work working our ‘wedding’ magic on this fab location.
The décor – our rustic LOVE letters:
Downstairs, our rustic light up LOVE letters and a statement floral centrepiece provided by Verdure Floral adorned the stage area. With the delectable Tom Hardy forming the backdrop to this setting, it made for some truly iconic images with our bride and groom.
Travelling upstairs, our rustic light up love heart formed the backdrop to a beautiful image of our bride and groom seated amongst a selection of beautifully delicate blooms and twinkling candlebra. Adi, the creative director of Verdure Floral, chose to work with a beautiful selection of jewel coloured flowers for the shoot. His chosen colours worked magnificently against the gritty, pared back décor of the Peaky Blinders Bar. The chosen flowers featured included Orchids, Roses, Ranunculus, Anemone’s and Lisianthus. These looked fabulous against the copper metallic frame and wedding backdrop provided by Words To Glow and the whitewashed driftwood and metal framework of our rustic letters.
Our Wedding Backdrop:
Of course , our new Seraphina wedding backdrop created further opportunities for some fabulous wedding images. We think the backdrop looked perfectly in keeping with the rustic feel to the bar. The backdrop is 8ft tall and made from manufactured steel, and is hand spray painted in metallic copper. With rustic white washed drift boards it features hanging vintage Edison bulbs. The backdrop is supplied with a choice of romantic wedding phrases. These include ‘It Was Always You’, ‘To Have & To Hold’, “You & Me’, Always & Forever, ‘Forever You’ and ‘And The Adventure Begins’, also in a metallic copper finish. The backdrop is shown here with beautiful blooms from the amazing Verdure Floral. Alternatively, the backdrop can be supplied with our own artificial foliage.
Our Boxed LOVE letters:
Our new METRO Boxed LOVE letters looked fabulous sitting atop the Peaky Blinders Bar, accompanied by pretty floral hoops, by Verdure Floral. Taking inspiration from modern and funky city centre, industrial spaces, the letters feature a painted blackboard base encased in industrial inspired driftwood. Their clean lines and sparkly cabochon light bulbs provide a warm and ambient lighting. These provided a beautiful backdrop to our wedding photography.
In addition to this, the Verdure team selected an array of eucalyptus, french ruscus, and ivy as a warm base to show off the colours and different textures of the flowers decorating the venue.
Alice modelled our dresses and accessories beautifully throughout the day. The White Closet Studios in Liverpool supplied all the dresses featured throughout the shoot.
The first dress worn by Alice in the downstairs bar was a stunning daffodil fitted dress and Ivy skirt by Halfpenny London. The dress was styled with the gorgeous Ivy fringed skirt which adds texture and fabulous movement. Very reminiscent of the 1920’s flapper girl era.
For the images from the upstairs bar, Alice wore a simply stunning long sleeved Spanish Lace dress by Spanish designer, Jesus Peiro 8016. Declared as Alice’s favourite of the whole shoot, it featured feminine and floaty sheer panels and a soft tulle skirt.
Finally, for the outdoor shots on the scrubland, Alice wore a simple yet glamourous backless satin dress. The dress is called Thea with Berry French lace jacket by Halfpenny London.
Perhaps THE most exciting aspect to organising the shoot was securing the support of London based Garrison Tailors. Owned by Steve Knight, the creator of the TV series no less (!!!) We were absolutely stoked to have them on board! Featured throughout, the suit, was their signature 2018 Thomas Tweed 2 Piece Suit with Shelby Tweed Waistcoat. Of the absolute highest quality, the suit has been cut from British Tweed supplied by Abraham Moon & Sons who have been making Woven Shetland Tweed since 1837. Seen here with a dashing charcoal coloured waistcoat and twilight blue paisley accessories, this provides a stunning contrast to the chosen tweed.
The cap of course just had to be an iconic Thomas Tweed News Boy cap. The brand’s tweed is 100% wool and garments are 100% handmade in Britain.
Hair & Beauty:
Bethany from The Vintage Beauty Parlour in Manchester created the fabulous hair styling and makeup. Bethany chose to create a style reminiscent of the 1920’s sculpting a classic finger wave for our stunning model, Alice. The hair was tonged and then sculpted into curls and waves. For the makeup, Bethany maximised on Alice’s amazing English Rose complexion. Bethany kept things fresh and natural, with just a hint of a soft, smoky eye. This created maximum impact for Alice’s complexion with glamorous red lips in a berry red tone.
Organising this shoot was an absolute honour. Let’s be honest, it was a long, hot day. We certainly returned home weary and ready for our comfy beds. But, the vision and our work was complete. I truly couldn’t have asked for a better bunch of suppliers to work alongside!
