Back in the summer of last year, Words To Glow responded to a request for help from a close acquaintance who, along with her friends was working very hard behind the scenes to organise the first ever fundraising ball for the wonderful Ward 84.
Ward 84 is Royal Manchester Children Hospital’s Oncology and Haematology ward. The ward treats children and babies with cancer and serious blood conditions. However, rather than relaying the story as it was told to me, I will hand over to those who have experienced Ward 84’s incredible support firsthand; the very people who are the hospital’s biggest advocates….
Here is Aiofe’s Story, as told by her lovely mum, Mairead:
Aoife was our daughter. She was diagnosed with infant Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia at four months old. This is a rare and aggressive form of cancer with survival rates at about the 50% mark. It is only now that her treatment has ended that we can say these statistics out loud. We watched her endure 2 long years of chemotherapy, suffering immensely through her treatment. It was an incredibly difficult and traumatic time for us all, but certainly for Aoife.
Ward 84 was our safe haven throughout. Children and parents travel from all over the Midlands and the North West to be treated here. The expertise and care we received was second to none. The nurses and doctors were professional, supportive and compassionate. Our consultant is passionate about the treatment of cancer in children. Our consultant is even more passionate about ensuring this can be done in the North West.
Consequently, we felt it so important to continue to raise funds for Ward 84. The ward requires ongoing support to ensure it has everything it requires to improve facilities and to treat children with cancer.
The Fundraising Event:
We are lucky to have an incredible group of friends. They all set to work on organising a black tie event at the AJ Bell Stadium to achieve this aim. The team were even able to persuade our Consultant and ward staff to attend as our guests of honour.
The night consisted of a 3-course meal, auction, raffle and disco. The compere was incredibly entertaining and kept all of our guests laughing. The prizes donated were incredible. Prizes ranged from VIP boxing tickets to Ipads, 3-month gym membership to corporate hospitality tickets for Manchester United and tickets to see Olly Murs in concert. The night was an incredible success and we managed to raise a staggering £13,000.
Local Business Support:
The support we received from various businesses and individuals was amazing. We were overwhelmed by the support we received, particularly from Words To Glow. When they heard about our story they wanted to help. They kindly donated light up words spelling out “Ward 84”. The letters were the first thing you saw on entering the room. Certainly, nobody could be in any doubt as to why they were there! The letters consequently became a real focal point for the night. We planned the night with scrutiny, intense organisation, passion, care and ambition. The letters added a touch of professionalism to this fabulous fundraising event.
We went from a group of fundraising friends to event organisers pulling off the event of the year! Words To Glow helped us to achieve this by providing the centre piece and setting the tone for the evening. Their customer service was amazing! The delivery was prompt and set up quick and efficient. There was absolutely no problems, which was something that was crucial with only 3 hours to set up!
Such an inspirational story and I am sure you will agree a very worthwhile cause. The team at Words To Glow were of course only too delighted to support Mairead and her friends in their fundraising efforts. They raised such a fantastic amount of money for RMCH and Ward 84!
